SCA's Mission Statement
The Society for California Archaeology is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to research, understanding, interpretation and conservation of the heritage of California and the regions that surround and pertain to it.
The Society promotes cooperation among archaeologists with an interest in California and surrounding regions by:
- Conducting symposia and meetings to share information on new discoveries, methods and techniques
- Supporting a program of publication including Proceedings of the Annual Meeting, a newsletter on current topics of concern with news and commentary, and a refereed professional journal
- Promoting standards and ethical guidelines for the practice of archaeology
- Fostering professional development
The Society seeks to increase public appreciation and support for archaeology in California by:
- Helping agencies, planners, landowners and developers to understand their
obligations and opportunities to manage archaeological sites
- Representing the concerns of California archaeologists before government
commissions and agencies, and on legislation
- Encouraging the conservation of archaeological resources for future research and public interpretation
- Discouraging vandalism and exploitation of archaeological resources
- Recognizing the significance that many sites possess for ethnic and local communities
- Encouraging respect, appreciation and a better understanding of California's diverse cultural heritage
Board, Committee, and Liaison Functions
An 8–member board oversees the activities of the SCA. The Business Office Manager also serves as a non–voting member of the Board. The President, President Elect, and Past President each hold a one–year term of office. Northern and Southern Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer are two–year terms of office. The Business Officer Manager serves at the pleasure of the Board.
Committees and liaisons perform much of the SCA's essential work. Committee members and liaisons are appointed by the Executive Board and serve at the Board's discretion. Committee Chairs and Liaisons report to specific Board members. Committees are composed of SCA members who have teamed together for promotion of SCA interests or execution of assigned tasks. Liaisons are SCA members who also hold membership in the contact organization and are expected to report to the SCA or represent SCA interests in the contact organization.
A wall chart (pdf - 153kb) (suitable for framing) maps out committee and liaison reporting duties.
Note that committee and liaison openings are often available and we can use your help. Are you a member of the SCA? Would you like to serve or assist as a committee member or liaison? Contact us at scaoffice@scahome.org.

Volunteer to run for office, be a coordinator, liaison, or help with one of the many committees. No one has enough time, but some people find the time because they think it is important enough.
