The Mediterranean Diet: New Ideas from Ancient Traditions
What comes to mind when you hear the words "Mediterranean Diet?" If pizza and gelato are the first things that pop up you'll find some surprises at the San Diego Archaeological Center's Visiting Scholar program with Philip J. Goscienski, M.D., author of Health Secrets of the Stone Age. Dr. Goscienski will discuss the true Mediterranean Diet and why physicians have begun to promote it to patients of all ages.

This program, sponsored by The San Diego Archaeological Center, will feature examples of Mediterranean food and drink. The admission fee is $5 for Center Members, $15 for non-members; this includes admission to the Center Museum. Reservations are required and space is limited to 40 attendees. Throwing Javelins and Hurling Words? Evidence of Literacy in the Northern Frontier Zone of Roman Britain
Join us at The San Diego Archaeological Center as we welcome Shannon Erickson, graduate of Roman Frontier Studies from Newcastle University in England. Ms. Erickson will discuss how the Roman Empire operated at its furthermost frontiers. She participated in three archaeological excavations, one in Bulgaria and the latter two in northern England. Ms. Erickson is currently an intern at the San Diego Archaeological Center.

The presentation will begin at noon and will last approximately one hour. Bring a lunch and notebook. Drinks will be provided by the Center. Exploring the Tintal - Mirador Causeway in the Mirador Basin of Northern Guatemala
The Santa Cruz Archaeological Society presents a lecture by Tom Schriener, Research Scientist with FARES/Mirador Basin Project (Foundation for Archaeological Research and Environmental Studies), Research Associate at UC Berkeley's Archaeological Research Facility, and long-time SCAS member. He will be speaking about exploring the Tintal - Mirador causeway in the Mirador Basin of Northern Guatemala. The main site, El Mirador, a Pre-Classic site with the world's largest architecture can be viewed using GoogleEarth. This program will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Sesnon House. Admission is free.

California Mission Studies Association (CMSA) 29th Annual Conference
The conference will be held at Mission San Rafael.

The CMSA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the continued preservation and research of the colonial California Hispanic Mission system. Conference themes cover a wide range of issues relating to the Mission system. We expect 200-250 attendees, including scholars, heritage professionals, clergy, administrators, parish members, and Native Californian groups from across the state of California.

We welcome SCA members to submit papers and to attend the conference. Representatives from all 21 California Missions will be present, and it is an excellent opportunity for the California archaeological community to contribute to our greater understanding of the Mission system. People wishing to submit papers should send abstracts to Ty Smith at tysmith@parks.ca.gov. Registration can be done online at www.ca-mission.org.

The Art and Science of Flintknapping
This is a weekend learning experience for those who want to make stone tools and understand the waste products of the reduction process. This anthropology class is taught by Dr. Jeanne Day Binning and Charles (Chuck) Bouscaren at the California State University Desert Studies Center (ZZYZX) near Baker, California. Students stay in a dormitory setting and five cafeteria-style meals are provided. The class is $325.00 per person or $610.00 per couple and starts at 7:00 PM on Friday evening and ends early Sunday afternoon. Most of the class time is spent doing hands-on activities; lectures occur on Friday and Saturday evenings. The class is limited to 23 students.

Pottery in Archaeology: Past and Present
Please join us at the San Diego Archaeological Center for Class 2: Kumeyaay Pottery Workshop at KIIC. Martha Rodriguez, Kumeyaay-Tipai, potter, basket weaver, artist, and educator will conduct a class on how to make pottery from raw clay. Students will go home with a small olla created at the workshop.

The lecture will include:
  • Martha's describing her pottery collection, letting the class know what to expect for the day, and showing a video of her mother making pottery, basketweaving, etc.
  • Grinding the raw clay and mix with water.
  • Martha will demonstrate how to make an Olla.
  • The class will make a medium size olla to take home!
Students will need to wear clothes that can get dirty, and bring a bandana to wear around their mouth to keep from breathing in dust. Students will also need to bring a bucket to mix the clay and then to carry home the damp olla.

Fresco Hunting in Bulgaria: A Visiting Scholar Presentation
The San Diego Archaeological Center is pleased to announce Gene Berryhill PhD as the March Visiting Scholar for the 2012 Second Saturday series. Dr. Berryhill will delight the audience with her presentation on Fresco Hunting in Bulgaria. She will offer information covering the results of a photography archaeology trip to Bulgaria to shoot late medieval frescoes, made possible by a Fulbright grant and the Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS). The purpose of the expedition was to record frescoes for preservation and restoration while creating public awareness, an important aspect, as these treasures are crumbling into ruins with every rainfall.

Geographic Information Systems for Documentary and Analytic Archaeology
The Santa Cruz Archaeological Society presents a lecture by William Clay Poe, Professor of Archaeology in the Department of History at Sonoma State University. Dr. Poe will describe GPS-based mapping projects on several sites in South and Central America, Peru, Belize, and Guatemala. Dr. Poe holds a Ph.D. in Mediterranean Studies from Brandeis University as well as a number of other academic degrees.

The San Diego Archaeological Center, in partnership with the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center, are proud to sponsor a historic walk through the Laguna/El Prado Campground on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Steve Harvey, Heritage and Tribal Relations Program Manager for Cleveland National Forest has offered to spend the day hiking in the nearby Lagunas telling us the story of the first people who lived in the area. We will be visiting their ancient village sites where Steve will describe the chronological history of ancient civilizations and how they lived and survived.

The Center for American Archeology presents the annual Flintknapping Workshop with Tim Dillard
The Center for American Archaeology is pleased to offer a week-long, hands-on workshop in flaked-stone tool manufacturing technology as a part of our summer calendar in 2012. Tim Dillard, a phenomenal flintknapper with thirty years of experience, will lead the course.

Lectures on flaked-stone reduction, chert, quarrying strategies, local geology, and technical aspects of knapping will set the stage for work sessions that will include billet percussion and pressure flaking techniques. Tim is the master of the use of the traditional antler billet for percussion flaking. Chert collection trips and heat-treating sessions are also a part of the week's activities. Experienced and novice flintknappers alike are invited to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity.
